Joshua Clay is the student of the month for August. He conducts himself very well in class, showing all the right edicate. His spirit in the way he trains is excellent. He always has a look of determination on his face and if not that, it is a nice smile.

Character development in kids is very important. Joshua has received favourable comments on his behaviour at school and from his parents.

The Redlands Karate Dojo has unique programs that use personal development tools and the Martial Arts to improve stable emotion, discpline, good decision-making, and team-oriented behaviour.

Two key themes are:

   1. Fun oriented Self-Defence

   2. Development of character and self confidence

While participating in our classes is both healthy and fun, students will be learning important lessons in values and respect that will shape how they view the world around them. Our unique program emphasizes the importance of avoiding confrontations through conflict management, and confident stable emotion. Classes are structured emphasizing small, realistic goals that every student can achieve. Should the need ever arise; students will have the foundation to defend themselves from violence.

At the end of each school term we give students the opportunity to test for certification in:

   * Karate Basics
   * Applications
   * Moving Combinations
   * Self Defence
   * Kata
   * Sparring ( above orange belt )
   * Fitness
   * Personal Development ( improvements in    behavior at home, school and in the dojo )

This provides students with a challenging goal to strive for during the term. Students who pass the test will receive a grading certificate and their appropriate belt.

Keep in mind that gradings are considered to be a very special event for this Dojo. Grades are not awarded lightly and so they are a real achievement when you attain them.

Dojo Etiquette

Dojo etiquette is a tradition which has been passed down for many years. Dojo etiquette are the rules by which karate practioners are to conduct themselves. By having these rules, karate as a whole, is brought up to a higher level of respect. Most styles have some form of dojo etiquette. Listed below are the rules by which we should conduct ourselves.

  • Always bow before entering and leaving class.
  • Always be respectful of your sensei and sempai.
  • If your late,  be sure to bow in before participating in class activities.
  • When called to line up, always respond by saying "HAI" and quickly line up by rank.
  • When called upon in class to assist the instructor, always respond with "HAI" and then bow to the instructor before and after the demonstration.
  • Never argue or make excuses for mistakes.
  • When straightening your Gi, always turn around and face the back of the class.
  • Always remain focused and alert.
  • When the instructor yells "Yame" that means that you stop what you are doing immediately.
  • Try not to talk or be disruptive when your instructor is teaching.
  • When bowing to a person of a higher rank, be sure to bow with yours eyes looking down. Looking at your sempai in the eyes means you do not trust them and is disrespectful.
  • Always keep your Gi clean and tidy.
  • Always respect the Dojo (hall) and the people in it.
