Basic self defense is the first level of activity this club provides. Over time, as a student progresses, we then build in the rigors and traditions of Japanese Karate. Beginners and general public are welcome.

Video 00: Kid`s belt test March 2008 featuring Willem Langford, Jacob Koehler, Tama Hoare & Eastyn Collie (8 min).
Video 01: A brief clip showing how to do a take down by using a fake head klck. This relates to sports karate rather than street based self defense. At USC we teach both sides of the art.
Video 02: A 15 minute video which talks about karate styles and intorduces why traditional karate kata relate to self defense through its applications and form.
We have a number instructors that have come together from a number of different styles including: Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Kyokushin and Tae Kwon Do. The style we all now practice at USC is Shito-Ryu Karate which was founded by Kenwa Mabuni. As a beginner this will be the core of your training and as you progress you will gain an understanding of broader styles and techniques. Shito-Ryu possess the kata of both Goju and Shotokan and offers a good balance of “liner and hard” with “round and soft”. Therefore, the three styles are innately connected. In fact, Mabuni Sensei (who founded Shito-ryu) regularly trained with Funakoshi (Shotokan) and Miyagi (Goju) to work on concepts, techniques and kata. We honour this age-old tradition and so enjoy training with other styles/clubs and welcome students from the many forms of martial arts to come into our dojo and train with other like minded people.
