Full Course Description:

Video 40, Some Dojos in Japan Worth a Visit       (7 min, 8MB)

If you are going to practice karate in Japan this video highlights some dojos in Japan including Shotokan, Kyokushin, Goju-ryu and Shito-ryu in Japan. It discusses, from a Western point of view, what it is like to visit and practice karate in Japan at clubs located in Tokyo, Kansai, and Okinawa regions of Japan.

Video 41, Training Karate in Japan as an uchi deshi       (6 min 22sec, 9MB)

What is training karate in Japan, and living in Japan, really like? Jason Armstrong, Ph.D. (5th Dan) spent extended periods of time in Japan between 1995 and 2002 and his stay included being a live in student of a Master (an "uchi deshi"). This video will describe what dojos, sensei and students are like in a variety of Japanese training environments in Japan. The video contrasts Karate in Japan as an environment compared to the USA and Australia (where Dr. Armstrong has other karate clubs). Karate styles that were visited in Japan included Shito-Ryu, Shotokan, Kyokushin and Goju in Okinawa. Video footage is also included with some of Sensei Armstrong's Western Students visiting Japan to perform a black belt test (Shodan).

Video 42, Living in, or Visiting, Japan       (9 min 21sec, 11.7MB)

What is it like to visit, or live in Japan. Those interested in a trip often ask: "is Japan really that expensive?", "How do I keep costs to a minimum?", "How do I get around?", "Do I need to speak Japanese?", "Where are the best places to go?". These and more questions are answered.

Video 43, Introduction to Zen and the Martial Arts - a perspective from training karate in Japan

       (8 min 46sec, 7MB)

In the West Zen is not often taught as an integral part of martial arts and self defence technique. This video lesson introduces examples of how Zen is applied to karate and fighting, and explains why the mind and confidence play such an important role in hand to hand combat. It relates the study of this side of karate to living and training in Japan. This is a small precursor course to our workshop video for download "Zen for Life and Work" which covers in depth how to move your martial arts Zen and Startegy from the dojo to your life. It is also an introduction to the "Advanced Fighting Course" offered by Applied Zen which furthers what it is like to practice karate in Japan.

Video 44, Visiting Japan for Karate to Test for a Dan Rank       (8 min 30sec, 11MB)

This video documents a couple of trips made by American brown belts who visited Japan to test for Shodan, or black belt. The author also reflects on gradings in Japan for ranks above shodan - all related to karate practice in Japan. Again karate belt test are compared in Japan to the west and this karate video includes some footage of Westerners training karate in Japan.

Video 45, Having multiple Sensei, a case study from Karate in Japan

     (8 min, 8MB)

The Chinese classic on "The Way", Tao De Ching, illustrates that change is inevitable. It seems that if anyone practices karate for an extended period of time they are most likely to be exposed to an organizational shift. An excellent recent publication, "Karate Masters" (ISBN 0865681880), interviews a number of modern day karate masters and reveals many valuable insights into the art, however, the book also illustrates that going through organizational changes is a common occurrence despite the traditions of our art. This video talks about causes, and the importance of continuing to train if exposed to an organizational shift. A case study from karate in Japan is used to map out an interesting story.

Files are conveniently sized for broadband download. Total video time 48 min.
