8th Dan Hanshi McCarthy pictured with one of our Shodan's - Dana Buchman |
8th Dan Hanshi McCarthy: is considered a Japanese certified modern master whose ranks have come through the Japanese Butokukai due to his exposure to that organization while living in Japan. He was born in North America and is unique in his extensive exposure to traditional karate (traditional point fighting, weapons & kata) combined with explorations into physical violence of more thorough nature than most traditional practitioners. This includes involvement in such arenas full contact Shoot fighting (in its early form inside Japan) and academic investigations into the origins of kata and its relationship to non-rule based physical violence. His research saw him travel throughout Asia including China and Okinawa to compile an extensive body of work around kata origins and self defense. He has authored many books, and his work on exposing the original nature of kata led to the issue of some of his Dan ranks from the Japanese Butokukai. He travels the world these days giving seminars on martial arts. In particular the kata-self defense seminars provide many with profound insights into how different the moves in kata are practiced with the Japanese interpretations of the modern day (the last 70 years) versus the original intentions.
